Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter today said that Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) should further strengthen research on the production of ready-to-cook fish products to make fish attractive to the new generations.
"Fisheries research should be further accelerated to meet the nutritional needs of the people," she said while speaking as the chief guest at a workshop on "Annual Research Progress (2023-24) Review and Formulating Plan (2024-25)" organized by BFRI at Sech Bhaban in the city's Manik Mia Avenue.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary ATM Mostafa Kamal spoke at the event as the special guest with BFRI Director General Dr Anuradha Bhadra in the chair, said a press release.
Farida called upon the BFRI authorities to conduct research on which type of fishes are available in which part of the country. She suggested preparing a research-based map in this regard, which would be very helpful for the next generation to learn about fish.
The adviser also suggested that BFRI can publish its journal in Bangla apart from English so that readers can easily understand it.
About fish export, she said, "We want to export fish... but excessive fish catching will endanger the environment."
Speaking on the occasion, ATM Mostafa Kamal said the BFRI has brought back many lost indigenous fish species.
The institute should conduct research on how to increase the production of indigenous fishes and make those available to the people, he added.
Department of Fisheries (DoF) Director General Md Zillur Rahman spoke at the workshop as the guest of honor while more than a hundred people from different professions and institutions including fisheries scientists, DoF officials, teachers of different universities, representatives from development partner organizations, fish farmers and fishermen took part in the workshop.
A total of 51 research findings and proposals were presented in the day-long workshop.
