SUNAMGANJ The cultivation of Boro paddy is going on in full-swing in all 12 upazilas of the district. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said the farmers started to cultivate the crop that is going on in full swing. This year a target was set to cultivate the paddy on 2,23,410 hectares of land in the district.
Farmers are spending busy time planting Boro crops seedlings as the plantations are flourishing in every haor of the district. Of the total land,
85 percent has been planted.
Farmers are expecting bumper production of the crop due to the favorable weather condition.
Of the total land, 16,185 hectares have been brought under the cultivation in Sadar upazila, 10,583 hectares in Bishwambharpur, 12,901 hectares in
Doirabazar, 14,979 hectares in Chhatak, 30,177 hectares Dirai, 21,699 hectares in Shalla, 22,612 hectares in Shantiganj, 20,423 hectares in
Jagannathpur, 24,505 hectares in Jamalganj, 17,439 hectares in Tahirpur and 31,907 hectares of land in Dharmapasha upazila.
The DAE has set a target to cultivate local variety on 1,000 hectares of land, hybrid variety on 65,200 hectares and ufshi variety on 1,57,210
hectares of land.
The department has also fixed a target of producing 19 maunds of Ufshi, 22 maunds of hybrid and eight maunds of local paddy from per bigha of land.
This season, the total production target in the district has been set at 13.78 lakh metric tons of paddy, the DAE sources said.
Ali Ahmed Murad, a self-reliant farmer of Ramjibanpur village under Dakshin Sreepur union in Tahirpur upazila and also chairman of Dakshin Sreepur Union
Parishad (UP), said that this time he is cultivating Boro on 44 acres of land.
Till Thursday, he has planted seedlings on 32 acres of land and 12 acres of land is not suitable for planting due to waterlogging in the greater Shanirhaor of Tahirpur upazila. The seedlings will be planted as soon as the water recedes, he said.
Golam Jilani Chowdhury, a self-reliant farmer of Kapan village in Dirai upazila, told BSS that last year he cultivated Boro paddy on 50 acres of land and got about 2,000 maunds of paddy. This year, he cultivated the paddy on 67 acres of land and expecting a bumper production.
After talking to several other farmers, they said that last year, due to favorable weather conditions, all crops yielded as expected. If the weather is good and there are no natural hazards, we get a lot of profit apart.
DAE Deputy Director of Sunamganj Bimal Chandra said, "Boro sapling planting programme is going on in full swing and we are advising and supporting the
farmers in this regard."
